Change of University Name
CHANGE OF NAME: from West Nile to Muni University
Naming of universities and other degree awarding institutions in Uganda is guided by the Universities and Other Tertiary institutions Act (2001) as amended and in accordance to the National Council for Higher Education Statutory Instruments No. 1 (2007), accessible at website: www.unche.ug. Accordingly, the university name must be neutral, without bearing heavily on political undertone.
Initial consultations by the Taskforce revealed that majority of the stakeholders wanted the public university to take a regional name. However, since this name "West Nile University "would violate the laws and regulations of the country, further consultations showed that majority of the stakeholders favored designating the university as "Muni University".
"Muni" is the name of the beautiful hill on which the university main campus is going to be located. It is adjacent to the National Teacher's College, NTC- Muni. This hill on which these two institutions are situated is where opinion leaders and elders from the ethnic Lugbara community congregated in the past, to make judgments on individuals and community. It is therefore appropriate that it carries-on a legacy in modern times, as a seat of knowledge creation and preservation, research, innovations and community out reach.
"Muni University" will be the designated name, but final approval awaits the decree of the parliament of the Republic of Uganda.
