Dr. ALex Abaca is a Lecturer of Crop Science and Acting Head of the Department of Crop Science. He holds a PhD in Biology from the University of Bath in the United Kingdom; MSc in Molecular Plant Science; also, from the University of Bath, MSc in Crop Science – majoring in Plant Breeding from Makerere university, Kampala, and a BSc in Agriculture - majoring in Crop Science from Makerere University. He previously worked as a Senior Research Officer with the National Agricultural Research Organisation (NARO). His current research focus is on developing nutrient enhanced (zinc and iron) common bean varieties that are climate resilient.

His areas of research interest include; Food security and livelihoods, Climate change, Crop Bio-fortification through Breeding, Population Genetics of Plants, Agronomy and Crop physiology, and Plant Molecular Biology and Biotechnology that can either be laboratory or field-based experiments employing both qualitative and quantitative methods of data capturing.
