Mr. Hilary Edema is a Laboratory Technician in the Department of Animal Science. He holds a Master of Science in Life Sciences, specializing in Bioinformatics and Biotechnology from Skolkovo Institute of Science and Technology (skoltech), Moscow, Russia. He is also a candidate for Master of Science in Molecular Biology and Biotechnology from Makerere University, Kampala. He holds a Bachelor of Agriculture degree (Honours) from Gulu University. Hilary has also undertaken one-year intensive online training in Artificial Intelligence (AI), specializing in machine learning, deep learning and computer vision from Ineuron.ai, Karnataka, India.
He was very instrumental in setting up the Gulu University Multipurpose Research Laboratory and later on implemented four different research projects in the same Laboratory (2015-2018). While in Russia, he worked with EFKO Group’s R&D Innovation Center, at the Department of Genetic engineering, where he designed and genetically engineered a yeast strain to produce a new enzyme for producing cheese.

His areas of research interest are in; synthetic biology, omics data analysis, bioinformatics, enzyme design, genome mining, genetic engineering and genome editing, bioweapons and biosafety and synthetic “food capsules” as an option for human survival during cataclysmic events, and Artificial Intelligence.
