Mr. Benson Oloya is an Assistant Lecturer in the Department of Chemistry. He has more than 16 years of teaching experience, with ten years at the secondary school level and six years at higher Institutions of Learning. He holds a Master’s of Science in Chemistry degree from Mbarara University of Science & Technology, Uganda, and a Bachelor of Science with Education degree from the same University. Mr. Oloya is a DAAD alumnus, having benefited from a DAAD In-Country Scholarship for both his MSc (2012-2014) and his ongoing PhD in Chemistry study at Makerere University, Uganda. He is also an OPCW Fellow (University of Potsdam, Germany: 2021-2022) as part of his ongoing PhD training.

His research interests are Natural products/Phytochemistry and Organic Synthesis; Medicinal Chemistry and Drug discovery; Cyanide studies in cassava; related Life sciences research. He has skills in separation/isolation of Natural Products and interpretation of both 1D (Proton & Carbon 13) and 2D (HSQC, DEPT, COSY, HMBC, NOESY) NMR spectra; IR and MS spectra.

Mr. Oloya has attended and presented papers at conferences both locally and internationally. He is also a reviewer with two journals: “Tropical Medicine and Health,” and “Vegetos”, both published by Springer Nature.

He has developed many course units, which have formed part of the various curricula at Muni University, including: B.Sc./Education (Revised), B.Education (Primary), BSc., and MSc. in Chemistry. He was also part of the team that revised the Uganda Ordinary Level Chemistry Curriculum spearheaded by the National Curriculum Development Centre (NCDC) from 2016-2020.
